Amazon Lex
AWS service for building voice and text chatbots into applications and contact centers
- Tool type
- Conversational AI bot builder
- Made for
- Developers and contact-center teams
- Runs on
- AWS cloud (console and API)
- Built in the Lex V2 console or via APIs and SDKs; runs as an AWS-hosted service
What it does
Amazon Lex takes in text or spoken input from end users and turns it into a managed conversation with a bot you design. The bot interprets what the user wants and responds by voice or text, so an application can handle tasks such as booking, raising a ticket or answering common questions.
Developers build bots in the AWS console or through APIs, either by hand, from a natural language description, or with the automated chatbot designer, which analyses existing conversation transcripts. A Visual Conversation Builder lets non-developers contribute to bot design. Bots can run as request-and-response calls or as a continuous streaming conversation that handles pauses and interruptions. They can be deployed to mobile apps and chat services such as Slack and Twilio SMS, and Lex integrates natively with Amazon Connect for phone and chat support.
It suits developers and contact-center teams already working on AWS, such as those automating customer self-service, call routing or internal FAQ support. An AWS account is required. Billing is pay-as-you-go per request, with a limited free allowance for new accounts. It is a build-it-yourself service rather than a ready-made chatbot, so expect design, testing and integration work.

- Add a booking assistant to an app
- Inputs: a natural language description of the booking task. Steps: generate a baseline bot, refine intents in the console, test it, deploy it to a chat channel or the app via API. Output: users complete bookings by voice or text.
Before you choose
- Pricing is metered per API request and differs between request-and-response and streaming models, so estimate costs with the AWS Pricing Calculator.
- Free allowances for new accounts are time-limited, not a permanent free tier.
- Both Lex V1 and V2 documentation exist; new work targets the V2 console.
