What it does

assistant-ui is a frontend library for developers building conversational AI applications. Its React components and runtime manage chat threads and streamed responses, while adapters connect the interface to an AI backend. Developers can scaffold a project or add the library to an existing app, then compose and customize the chat UI in their code.

The library supports web apps, React Native apps for iOS and Android, and terminal apps with React Ink. Documented backend options include the Vercel AI SDK, LangGraph, LangChain, Google ADK, and custom servers. The UI can present streaming responses, reasoning, tool activity, approvals, sources, attachments, branching, voice, and generative UI. assistant-ui is MIT-licensed; hosted assistant-cloud persistence is optional and separately priced. Model execution is handled by the app’s backend, so developers supply or configure that runtime and account for any model-provider or hosting charges.

Getting started requires a JavaScript development environment and a compatible app setup; the installation guide recommends Next.js or Vite and documents an API-key route for model access. The library’s documented framework surfaces should not be confused with a hosted end-user chat product. When deploying a backend endpoint, the documentation warns that browser-supplied prompts and tool schemas are untrusted and recommends server-side authorization, validation, and authentication.

What it can do

  • Composable chat UI components and primitives
  • Runtime management for chat threads and streams
  • Backend adapters for AI runtimes
  • Rendering for reasoning, tool activity, approvals, sources, and attachments
  • Branching conversations and voice interfaces
  • Generative UI

Works with

  • Vercel AI SDK
  • LangGraph
  • LangChain
  • Google ADK
  • Custom backend adapters

Before you choose

  • assistant-ui is a frontend library, not a model host: the app’s backend runs the model and returns streamed responses.
  • Hosted persistence is optional; assistant-cloud plans are distinct from the MIT-licensed library, and model or compute charges may be separate.
  • The installation guidance cautions that browser-supplied system prompts and tool schemas are untrusted; secure backend routes with server-side validation and authentication.

  1. Create a project with `npx assistant-ui@latest create`, or initialize an existing app with `npx assistant-ui@latest init`.
  2. Set up a supported React app; the installation guide recommends Next.js or Vite and describes prerequisites including Tailwind CSS and TypeScript path aliases.
