Box AI API
Box AI API for asking questions, extracting metadata, and summarizing Box files
- Tool type
- API for Box file Q&A, generation, and extraction
- Made for
- Developers and enterprise content teams
- Runs on
- Box-hosted API endpoints called from your app
- Box handles model infrastructure; you call endpoints over HTTP, with cURL or SDK clients. The developer console is used for setup, not as the runtime.
What it does
Box AI API takes files stored in Box, or text you supply, plus a prompt, and returns model-generated answers, summaries, generated text, or extracted metadata. Requests can reference a single file, up to 25 files for multi-file questions, or a Box Hub, which searches the hub's indexed content. Text-based files are converted to text, and images in PDF, TIFF, PNG, and JPEG formats are processed with automatic OCR on supported endpoints.
Developers call the API from their own applications, and the documentation shows Python SDK quick starts. Teams can override the default model, prompt template, system message, and LLM parameters through an ai_agent object, which is useful for pinning a model version for consistent output. Box AI for UI Elements can embed question answering in Content Preview, and admins can review AI query activity in User Activity Reports.
Box AI API suits developers building document automation and knowledge tools on content stored in Box. An administrator must enable API access and authorize the application’s AI scope. The quickstart uses a short-lived developer token for testing; a production integration needs an appropriate application authentication flow. Prompt, file and image limits vary by endpoint, so consult the matching guide before designing large-document or multimodal workflows.
What it can do
- Ask questions about a single Box file or multiple files
- Ask questions across a Box Hub's indexed content
- Generate text from a single file
- Extract metadata and structured data from documents, with OCR on supported endpoints
- Override default models, prompts, and LLM parameters per request
- Embed Box AI question answering in Content Preview via UI Elements
Works with
- Box Hubs
- Box Content Preview via Box AI for UI Elements
- Python SDK
Example workflows
- Invoice field extraction
- Illustrative example. Inputs: an invoice PDF stored in Box. Steps: call the extract or extract_structured endpoint once per file with the fields to capture, running requests in parallel for batches. Outputs: extracted vendor, total, and date values returned for downstream accounts payable processing.
- Hub-based knowledge question answering
- Illustrative example. Inputs: a Box Hub of curated documents and a natural-language question. Steps: call the ask endpoint with the hub as the item and the question as the prompt. Outputs: an answer generated from the hub's indexed content, subject to Box permissions as described in the tutorial.
Before you choose
- Check the limits for the selected endpoint, including prompt length, text representation size and image pages.
- A quickstart developer token expires after one hour; production applications need an appropriate authentication flow.
- Test extraction and language quality against representative documents before relying on generated fields.

Get started
Requires admin enablement, a platform app with the Box AI scope, and a developer token.
- Ask a Box admin to enable Box AI API, then create a platform application in the Developer Console.
- Add the ai.readwrite scope via Configuration > Required Access Scopes > Content Actions, selecting Manage AI, and submit the app for authorization if required.
- Generate a developer token from My Platform Apps or the app's Configuration page and use it in cURL or an SDK; the token is valid for one hour.
