What it does

Camunda takes in business process definitions modeled in BPMN, along with the AI agents, people, systems, applications, and business rules that participate in them. It produces an orchestrated, executable process: deterministic steps run as written, AI agents reason and choose tool calls inside boundaries the process sets, and human tasks are routed to reviewers. Operate gives live execution traces, incident handling, and an audit trail for running instances.

Teams typically model a process in Modeler, connect systems through Connectors (including MCP, A2A, and REST), and run it on the Zeebe engine. Its distinct approach is placing guardrails, approvals, and escalation paths inside the BPMN model so agents cannot skip them. It sits above existing ERP, CRM, and core systems rather than replacing them, and Camunda Process Test lets teams run process tests with coverage reporting in CI.

Camunda suits enterprise teams in regulated or high-volume operations that run multiple systems and want governed AI agents, plus developers building on Camunda 8. Access is through the Camunda 8 environment, with SaaS and Self-Managed deployment options, and sales contact or a demo is the route to purchase. Buyers should verify plan pricing and any free tier with Camunda, and expect to model processes in BPMN and integrate existing systems.

What it can do

  • Orchestrates AI agents, people, systems, and business rules in one BPMN-based end-to-end process
  • Enforces approvals, policy checks, escalation paths, and audit trails structurally inside the process model
  • Runs deterministic workflows, AI reasoning steps, and human tasks (Tasklist) together with durable execution and retries
  • Monitors running instances and incidents in Operate and analyzes bottlenecks in Optimize
  • Tests processes and agent behavior in CI with Camunda Process Test and coverage reports
  • Exposes processes as MCP tools and connects agents to external MCP tools and APIs

Works with

  • ERP
  • CRM
  • ITSM
  • MCP
  • A2A
  • REST APIs
  • Large language model providers

Before you choose

  • Adoption requires modeling processes in BPMN; teams should plan for process design work alongside AI agent use.
  • Plan prices and free-tier availability should be confirmed with Camunda sales or through a demo.
  • Camunda 7 is a separate product line with its own documentation; legacy users are directed to migration resources.
