What it does

Cloud Translation takes in text, documents such as DOCX, PPT, PDF and XLSX, and transcripts from speech-to-text, and returns translated output in up to 189 languages. It offers pre-trained Neural Machine Translation, custom models trained on your own segment pairs, and a translation large language model with Adaptive Translation that adapts to your examples.

People typically call it through the API from their own apps, websites, or pipelines. The Basic edition handles short or casual content, while Advanced adds glossaries, custom models, batch translation and formatted document translation. Subtitling and dubbing workflows chain it with Speech-to-Text, Transcoder, and Text-to-Speech, and it can feed translated responses into Customer Engagement Suite contact center flows.

It suits developers, localization teams and enterprises that need programmatic translation at scale. Access requires a Google Cloud project with the API enabled, and billing applies by character or page. The first 500,000 characters per month are free for NMT, but that allowance does not apply to LLM usage. Document and custom model costs are charged separately, and Adaptive Translation requires LLM pricing.

Example workflows

Translate a multilingual video with subtitles
Inputs: a video stored in Cloud Storage. Steps: transcribe with Speech-to-Text, translate the transcript text and SRT files with Cloud Translation, then attach the translated files via Transcoder API. Output: subtitle files in up to 130+ target languages.
Translate a formatted document
Inputs: a DOCX, PDF or PPT file. Steps: call the Advanced Document Translation endpoint with a target language and optional glossary. Output: a translated document that keeps the original formatting and layout.

Before you choose

  • NMT and custom models are billed per input character per target language, and LLM usage is billed on input and output characters separately, so the two rates cannot be compared directly.
  • Charges apply to the project that contains the translation model used, which may differ from the calling project.
  • The free 500,000-character allowance does not apply to LLM translations, and per-page document translation is billed separately.

Create a project with the API enabled and install client libraries; new customers get $300 in free credits per the marketing page.

  1. Create a Google Cloud project and enable the Cloud Translation API.
  2. Install a client library for your language and authenticate with your project credentials.
  3. Choose Basic or Advanced edition and, for custom terminology or models, create a glossary or train a custom model from a TSV of segment pairs.
