CoCalc
A collaborative project workspace where AI agents work with files, software, and terminals.
- Tool type
- Collaborative AI project workspace
- Made for
- Research, education, and technical teams
- Runs on
- Hosted web workspace, CLI, or customer-operated deployment
- CoCalc Star can be run on a computer or server the customer controls; the CLI runs on the user's computer.
What it does
CoCalc is a hosted workspace for directing AI agents inside durable projects. Users describe a task and point an agent at project files; the agent works with the software and terminals available in that project. The workspace offers an integrated Codex agent and Claude Code where enabled, as well as other command-line agents in project terminals. Users can inspect the saved app, report, or chart beside the conversation, ask for revisions, or continue hands-on in files, notebooks, and terminals.
The product is aimed at researchers, educators, technical teams, and institutions doing collaborative computational work. Access starts with a CoCalc account in a web browser; the CLI is an additional option for project automation from a computer. Agent access may use CoCalc membership, a Claude Pro or Max subscription, or an Anthropic API key, depending on the agent and site. Browser-driven agent work requires a project with internet access. Agents have full access to their own project; access to other projects must be granted, and ends when the agent's turn ends.
What it can do
- Direct Codex, Claude Code, or other command-line agents in project workspaces
- Work with project files, installed software, and terminals
- Review agent outputs, including apps, reports, and charts, beside the conversation
- Continue or revise agent work through conversation or direct project editing
- Share agents and projects with collaborators for review and continued work
- Run a project web browser that an agent can drive while the user watches or takes over
Works with
- OpenAI Codex
- Claude Code
- CoCalc CLI
Before you choose
- Claude Code availability depends on the site; its access can require CoCalc membership, a Claude Pro or Max subscription, or an Anthropic API key.
- Agent access to other projects requires an explicit grant; agents have full access to their own project, so grant only from a project whose collaborators you trust.
- Agent-driven web browsing requires a project with internet access; hosted resource levels and dedicated VM availability vary by membership, site, and account.
