What it does
Codex takes a plain-language task plus access to a code repository and returns inspected code, file edits, command runs and prioritized review findings. You describe what you want, such as explaining a project, refactoring a component or fixing a failure, and Codex works against your files and the tools installed on your machine. It can also hand work to cloud environments and return results to your local repository.
People use it from the terminal CLI, the desktop app, an IDE extension, the web, or non-interactively through codex exec in scripts and CI. A /review step checks uncommitted changes, a commit or a branch without modifying your working tree. Skills, plugins, MCP servers and subagents extend it, while /permissions and model settings control what it may do. Usage is shared with ChatGPT Work.
It suits developers and engineering teams who want an agent working inside real repositories. Access needs a ChatGPT sign-in (Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise/Edu) or an API key. Cloud features such as GitHub code review and Slack are not available with an API key. Usage is limited by plan and varies with task size, model and mode, so heavy use can require purchased credits. Creating Git checkpoints before tasks is recommended.
What it can do
- Inspect, edit and run code in a local repository from the terminal
- Run non-interactive tasks with codex exec in scripts and CI
- Review uncommitted changes, a commit or a base branch with /review
- Delegate work to Codex cloud and apply results locally
- Extend with skills, plugins, MCP servers and subagents
- Set permissions, sandbox boundaries, model and reasoning effort per run
Works with
- GitHub
- Slack
- Linear
- MCP servers
- Gmail
- Google Calendar
- Google Drive
Example workflows
- Refactor and review locally
- Input: a repository and a task such as refactoring a component. Steps: run codex in the project directory, describe the change, inspect commands and diffs, then run /review on uncommitted changes. Output: edited files plus prioritized review findings.
- Automate a task in CI
- Input: a repeatable prompt and an API key or access token. Steps: call codex exec from a pipeline script with chosen permissions. Output: non-interactive results from the workflow run.
Before you choose
- Usage limits depend on model, task size and local versus cloud; Plus and Business have five-hour estimates and weekly limits may apply
- API-key use is billed at API rates and excludes cloud features like GitHub review and Slack
- Some models are being retired or are off by default for Enterprise/Edu until an administrator enables them
