What it does

DeepWiki takes a GitHub repository, either a public one submitted by URL or a connected repo inside a Devin account, and produces a wiki with architecture diagrams, summaries of the codebase and links back to source files. You can also ask questions about the repository and get answers grounded in its code.

People use it to get oriented in an unfamiliar codebase: search for a repo on deepwiki.com, browse the generated pages, then ask follow-up questions. Public repos get basic documentation and Q&A; the fuller Ask Devin experience (advanced code search, planning, session creation) lives in the Devin app. A free MCP server lets other AI tools read wiki pages and ask questions. Repository owners can steer generation with a .devin/wiki.json file listing the pages and notes they want.

It suits developers, reviewers and students reading open-source or team code. The public site and MCP server need no sign-up; private repos require a Devin account. Higher-effort wikis consume paid ACUs, while the default low effort is free. Public DeepWiki covers GitHub repositories only and offers basic capabilities compared with the Devin app.

What it can do

  • Generates wikis with architecture diagrams and source links for a repository
  • Answers questions about a codebase using context from the code
  • Indexes public GitHub repositories submitted by URL
  • Steers page structure and notes through a .devin/wiki.json file
  • Exposes read_wiki_structure, read_wiki_contents and ask_question via a remote MCP server

Works with

  • GitHub
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) clients such as Cursor, Claude Code and Devin Desktop

Example workflows

Understand an unfamiliar open-source library
Input: a public GitHub repo name or URL. Steps: search it on deepwiki.com, read the architecture pages and diagrams, then ask a question about a specific module. Output: summaries, source links and a context-grounded answer.
Give a coding assistant repo context
Input: the MCP server URL added to an MCP-compatible client. Steps: register the server, have the assistant call read_wiki_structure, then read_wiki_contents or ask_question for a public repo. Output: documentation and answers inside the assistant.

Before you choose

  • Public DeepWiki and the MCP server provide basic documentation and Q&A; advanced features need the Devin app
  • Medium and high effort wikis are billed in ACUs and need a subscription or credits; generation is rejected otherwise
  • Private repositories require a Devin account and the Devin MCP server with an API key
