Descript

What it does

Descript takes in recordings, uploaded video or audio, Zoom calls, or a script, and transcribes them automatically. You then edit the transcript like a document: deleting a word removes that moment of footage, and moving a sentence moves the video with it. Output includes edited video and audio, captions, transcripts, clips, translations, share links and timeline exports for other editors.

People use it to record remotely, cut filler words and retakes, clean audio with Studio Sound, correct eye contact, and turn long recordings into short clips for YouTube, TikTok or LinkedIn. Underlord, its AI co-editor, can make edits from plain-language instructions, and an MCP connector lets assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT run edits in your Descript drive. A conventional timeline is available for fine control.

It suits podcasters, marketers, educators, and teams without a dedicated video department, and beginners can start with text edits. A free plan needs no credit card; paid plans are limited by media hours and AI credits, and automated editing consumes credits faster. Descript works on Mac, Windows and the web. The MCP cannot yet hand back an MP4 directly or import from YouTube links.

Input: a Zoom webinar recording. Steps: import it, let Descript transcribe it, remove filler words and long pauses, then ask Underlord to create clips and add captions. Output: short captioned clips reformatted for social platforms.

Edit from an AI assistant

Input: a recording and a request in Claude or ChatGPT. Steps: add Descript as a connector, sign in, ask for an edit such as Studio Sound plus captions. Output: an edited composition in your Descript project, a share link and optional SRT transcript.

Before you choose

• Usage is capped by monthly media hours and AI credits; automated MCP editing draws on the same credits
• The MCP cannot export an MP4 on request or import YouTube links; publishing gives a share link with a download URL
• Free plan has limits (60 media minutes per month, 720p export per the comparison table) and watermark-free export needs a paid plan
