What it does
Elephas is a desktop app for Mac that indexes your PDFs, Word files, spreadsheets, slide decks, and scanned pages on your computer. You ask questions in plain language, and it writes an answer that cites the quoted passage and the page, slide, or sheet it came from. Documents stay stored on your computer, and you choose whether each question is answered by Elephas AI, your own API key, or a model that runs on your computer.
People use it to search contracts, letters, notes, and reference files without reading each one, then open the cited source to confirm the wording. Before a question leaves the computer, personal details such as names, email addresses, and phone numbers are hidden and restored in the answer. Documents can be organized into Brains, and Team plans add shared Team Brains with end-to-end encrypted sync.
Elephas suits individuals, lawyers, accountants, consultants, researchers, and small teams who need answers from confidential files. It runs on macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon Macs, with Windows listed as coming soon, and offers a 7-day free trial with no card needed. It does not send emails, browse the web, or automate other apps, and personal-detail hiding is not a guarantee.
What it can do
- Index PDFs, scanned PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Markdown, text, CSV, HTML, EPUB, and images of text on the local computer
- Ask questions in plain language and receive answers with citations to the source passage, page, slide, or sheet
- Search documents in English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Tamil, Japanese, and Chinese, including cross-language questions
- Hide personal details before cloud AI requests and show what was hidden under each answer
- Choose Elephas AI, your own API key, or an on-computer model per question
- Organize documents into Brains and share Team Brains with invited members by role
Before you choose
- Personal-detail hiding is not a guarantee, so check what was hidden when it matters
- Team plans do not support your own API keys; cloud AI there uses Elephas AI with pooled usage, and team features exclude single sign-on and a web admin console
- The new Elephas is separate from the earlier Elephas Mac app; existing subscriptions and licence keys do not carry over and Brains do not import yet
