What it does
The Gamma API is a RESTful interface that mirrors the AI generation in Gamma's web app. You send a text prompt, anything from one line to roughly 100,000 tokens of source content, plus options such as format, number of cards, themes, image sources and language. It returns a generated presentation, document, social post or website, optionally exported to PDF or PPTX. Gamma also offers a hosted MCP server so AI agents can create, read, edit and export content.
Developers use it to build presentation generation into their own apps, run bulk jobs such as hundreds of personalized decks from a CSV or database, or script custom pipelines with their own error handling and retries. A template workflow lets a human approve a branded template and code then generates on-brand variants from it. Authentication is by API key for scripts and automation tools, or OAuth 2.0 for apps acting on behalf of users.
It suits developers, automation builders and teams wanting programmatic slide or document creation. You need a Gamma account and an API key from settings; plan eligibility is described inconsistently in Gamma's own pages, and usage is limited by credits and plan limits. It is an API, not an end-user app. Pricing for API usage beyond plan credits is not clear from the available pages.
What it can do

- Generate on-brand variants from an approved template
- Read, search, edit and export existing gammas and fetch analytics
- Organize output into folders and share by email
Works with
- Zapier
- Make
- n8n
- Profound
Example workflows
- Bulk personalized decks
- Input: a CSV or database of customer records and a prompt or approved template. Steps: loop over rows, POST each to the generation endpoint with format and export options, then collect results. Output: one generated presentation per row, exportable as PDF or PPTX.
- Agent-driven branded content
- Input: a connected MCP client and an approved template. Steps: the agent generates from the template, inspects the result, edits it, then requests an export. Output: an on-brand document or deck in the chosen format.
Before you choose
- Usage draws on AI credits and plan limits; errors like insufficient credits (403) and concurrency limits (429) can occur
- API key eligibility is described differently across Gamma pages, so confirm on your plan before building
- Custom MCP clients must register redirect URIs before connecting
