What it does
Google Lens takes a camera view, an image, or a screenshot as the search input. It returns web results, shopping listings showing who makes an item, its price and where to buy it, identifications of plants, dogs, artwork, murals and landmarks, and translated or copyable text. Its create mode also restyles a photo from a short prompt.
People point their phone at a menu, sign or handwriting to translate it into one of over 100 languages, or copy text to their phone or computer. Shoppers search from a picture and refine it with text for another color, pattern or size. Students look up explainers, videos and web results for a homework problem. In the Google app you can hold the shutter button and ask a spoken question about what the camera sees. Lens is also built into Chrome on desktop, so you can select something on a page and search it without leaving the tab.
It suits everyday users, shoppers, travellers and students who find it easier to show something than describe it. It is used through the Google app on Android and iOS, in the Camera app of select Android devices, and in Chrome on desktop. Shopping results are limited to a listed set of countries. Results depend on web content, so identification and homework answers should be checked.
