Google Translate
Translate text, documents, websites and images in the browser
- Tool type
- Multi-format translation web app
- Made for
- Everyday readers and writers
- Runs on
- Web browser
- Voice input is unavailable in some browsers.
What it does
Google Translate takes typed or pasted text, voice input, handwriting, and uploaded files, and returns translations in a chosen target language. Documents in .docx, .pdf, .pptx and .xlsx formats can be uploaded, images in .jpg, .jpeg, .png and .webp can be translated, and a web address can be entered to translate a whole site. The language list runs to well over 200 entries, including many regional and minority languages, with an option to detect the source language automatically.
People use it to read foreign-language pages, understand a document they received, translate a photo of signage or paperwork, or draft a message in another language. Results can be played aloud, saved, and revisited through a history list. Some output offers gender-specific alternatives that users can click through to compare. Document translation is powered by Google Cloud Translation.
It suits students, travellers, and workers who need a quick understanding of foreign-language content rather than a polished, professionally reviewed translation. It runs in a web browser at translate.google.com, and voice input is not available in every browser. File translation is limited to the listed formats. Translations may contain errors, and gender-specific wording can vary. For cost and sign-in terms, check the service directly.
