What it does

goose takes natural-language requests, tasks, and instructions in a continuous session and returns completed work. It can handle coding as well as research, writing, automation, and data analysis. For example, it can write JavaScript and HTML files for a small browser-based game and open the result in a browser when the Computer Controller extension is enabled.

goose is available as a native desktop app for macOS, Linux, and Windows, as a terminal CLI, and as an API for embedding. Distinctive features include extensions connected through the Model Context Protocol, portable YAML recipes for capturing workflows, subagents for parallel tasks, and security controls such as tool permissions and sandbox mode. It works with 15+ LLM providers using API keys or existing Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini subscriptions via ACP.

goose suits developers and technically comfortable users who want a local, extensible agent, and teams that want to share recipes or run them in CI. Access requires installing the desktop app or CLI and configuring a model provider, which may need an API key or subscription. Model access and costs depend on the provider you choose, and Windows setup may involve PATH configuration and keyring choices.

What it can do

  • Runs as a native desktop app, a full CLI, or an embeddable API
  • Connects to 70+ extensions through the Model Context Protocol
  • Works with 15+ LLM providers using API keys or existing subscriptions via ACP
  • Captures reusable workflows as portable YAML recipes
  • Spawns subagents to handle tasks in parallel
  • Includes prompt injection detection, tool permission controls, sandbox mode, and an adversary reviewer

Works with

  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) extensions for databases, APIs, browsers, GitHub, Google Drive
  • Agent Client Protocol (ACP) for connecting from Zed, JetBrains, and VS Code
  • Providers: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Ollama, OpenRouter, Azure, Bedrock

Example workflows

Build a small browser app
Input: a prompt such as creating an interactive browser-based tic-tac-toe game in JavaScript. Steps: goose plans the work, writes the JavaScript and HTML files in the working directory, and with the Computer Controller extension enabled opens the game in a browser. Output: a playable local web game.
Reusable team workflow
Input: a configured task with instructions, extensions, and parameters. Steps: capture the workflow as a YAML recipe, share it with the team, and run it in CI. Output: a repeatable run of the same workflow across users or pipelines.

Before you choose

  • Model access and costs depend on the provider you choose (API keys, subscriptions, or pay-per-use services such as OpenRouter).
  • On Windows, a PATH warning may require adding goose to PATH before configuring, and keyring errors may need the documented workaround.
  • Extensions and tool permissions shape what goose can access, so review controls such as sandbox mode before autonomous use.
