What it does
Griptape is an open-source Python framework for developing generative AI applications. Developers define tasks, organize them into agents, sequential pipelines or parallel workflows, and connect model providers and data stores through drivers. Its tools and engines support retrieval-augmented generation, extracting JSON or CSV from text, summarization and evaluation of generated text. Conversation memory can retain information across interactions; task memory can keep large task outputs outside the model prompt.
Install the library in a Python environment, configure credentials for the providers you use and start with a prompt task. The quickstart uses OpenAI by default and shows how to switch providers; optional dependencies enable integrations such as Anthropic and Pinecone. Application code, provider permissions and evaluation remain the developer’s responsibility. The Apache-2.0 library has no license fee, while inference, storage and hosting costs depend on the deployment. Griptape Nodes and Griptape Cloud are separate offerings with their own interfaces and terms.
What it can do
- Build agents, pipelines and parallel task workflows
- Connect models and storage through replaceable drivers
- Build retrieval-augmented generation pipelines
- Extract structured JSON or CSV, summarize text and evaluate generated outputs
- Manage conversation and task memory
- Extend agents with built-in or custom tools
Works with
- OpenAI API
- Anthropic API
- Pinecone
Before you choose
- Provider inference, storage and hosting charges are separate from the free library.
- Optional drivers need their corresponding dependencies and provider credentials.
- Griptape Nodes and Cloud are separate offerings; their UI, plans and hosting are not included in this library listing.
