What it does
Grok Build is a coding agent from xAI that takes natural-language prompts about your project, including references to specific files such as @src/main.rs, and responds with explanations and code work inside your repository. You can use it in a full-screen interactive terminal interface with mouse support, run it headlessly with a single prompt that can return streaming JSON, or connect it to other applications through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP).
In practice, you install it with a shell or PowerShell command, change into a project folder and run grok. The headless mode suits scripts, automations and bots. The agent is extensible through skills, plugins, marketplaces, modes, commands, hooks and MCP servers, and a grok inspect command lists the config, instructions, skills, hooks and MCP servers it found in the current directory. You can also define custom models in a config file. The grok-4.7 model is also offered through the xAI API for your own agent loops.
It suits developers who work in the terminal or want an agent they can script, and the documentation also covers enterprise deployments. You sign in through a browser on first launch, or set an XAI_API_KEY where no browser is available. Windows, macOS, Linux and WSL are supported. For billing details on Grok Build, request a quote or check xAI's current plans. Results with custom or third-party models will depend on those models.

Example workflows

- Illustrative example. Input: a project folder. Steps: install the CLI, cd into the project, run grok, then ask 'Explain this repo' and follow up with @file references. Output: written walkthroughs of the codebase and individual files.
- Script an analysis in automation
- Illustrative example. Input: a prompt and a codebase available to a script or bot. Steps: set XAI_API_KEY, call grok -p with a prompt and --output-format streaming-json. Output: streamed JSON that another program can consume.
Before you choose
- Billing for Grok Build is handled separately from published plan pricing, so request a quote or confirm current terms with xAI before committing.
