What it does

IBM watsonx Orchestrate takes in agents you build in the product, agents from third-party environments such as Amazon Bedrock, and the tools, apps and workflows they call. It produces a central control plane: a coordinated set of agents, plus views of owners, dependencies, activity, token and LLM-call usage, and agent quality measures such as response reliability and tool-call success.

Teams use it to build agents with a catalog of tools, integrations and prebuilt agents, then coordinate native and external agents on multi-step work such as customer service, HR requests, procurement, finance and IT. Its distinguishing focus is governance across a mixed estate: applying access rules, policies and guardrails (for example for sensitive or personally identifiable information) centrally, rather than one environment at a time. It connects through APIs and open standards including A2A and MCP.

It suits IT, security and AI leaders in larger organizations that already run agents in several places and want oversight. A 30-day free trial is available through an IBM account sign-up; paid plans start with Essentials. It can be deployed on IBM Cloud, AWS or on premises. Plans cap monthly active users and messages, and data isolation requires the Premium tier, so smaller or single-agent projects may find it more than they need.

What it can do

  • Build agents and custom tools with a tools and integrations catalog
  • Discover and connect third-party agents, including those in Amazon Bedrock, into one control plane
  • Orchestrate native and external agents, tools and workflows
  • Evaluate agent quality via user feedback, response reliability and tool-call success
  • Apply central access, policy and guardrails, including controls for sensitive or personally identifiable information
  • Track token usage and LLM calls to see agent cost

Works with

  • Amazon Bedrock
  • Salesforce
  • Workday
  • Slack
  • Microsoft Teams
  • A2A
  • MCP

Example workflows

Bring scattered agents under governance
Input: agents running in Amazon Bedrock and in Orchestrate. Steps: connect the environment, scan for agents, apply access and PII policies. Output: one inventory with owners, activity and token usage.
Automate an HR request flow
Input: employee policy questions and access requests across HR systems. Steps: build an agent with catalog tools, connect apps such as Workday, test in the chat interface. Output: a governed agent that handles requests and tracks quality signals.
