Jules
Autonomous coding agent that works on GitHub repositories in the cloud and opens pull requests
- Tool type
- Autonomous coding agent
- Made for
- Developers using GitHub
- Runs on
- Web app, cloud VM
- Work runs on a cloud virtual machine and results land in GitHub.
What it does
Jules takes a GitHub repository, a branch and a written prompt, such as bumping a framework version or fixing a bug. It clones the repository to a cloud virtual machine, drafts a plan, and then produces a diff of code changes. When you approve, it creates a pull request that you can merge into your branch and publish on GitHub.
People use it for chores they would rather hand off: bug fixing, version bumps, writing tests and building features. Tasks can be started from the Jules interface by choosing a repository and branch, or by adding the "jules" label to a GitHub issue. You review the proposed plan before work proceeds and browse the diff before anything is merged. Several tasks can run at once, depending on your plan.
It suits developers who keep code on GitHub and want routine work done asynchronously while they focus elsewhere. A free plan allows 15 tasks per day with 3 running concurrently. Higher limits come with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions, which are currently available only to individual @gmail.com accounts, and users must be 18 or older. The free plan uses Gemini 2.5 Pro, and daily limits reset on a rolling 24-hour window. Plans and limits may change over time.
What it can do
- Clones a selected GitHub repository and branch to a cloud VM
- Drafts a plan for the task that you can review before it continues
- Shows a diff of proposed code changes for quick review
- Opens a pull request that you can merge and publish on GitHub
- Accepts tasks through the "jules" label on GitHub issues
- Handles bug fixes, version bumps, tests and feature building
Works with
- GitHub
Example workflows
- Framework upgrade
- Input: a GitHub repository, a branch and a prompt asking to bump Next.js and move to the app directory. Steps: Jules clones the repo to a cloud VM, proposes a plan listing files to update, you approve it, then review the diff. Output: a pull request with the changes to merge.
- Issue-triggered task
- Input: a GitHub issue describing a bug, labeled "jules". Steps: Jules picks up the task, plans the fix, and presents a diff for your review. Output: a pull request you can approve, merge to your branch and publish.
Before you choose
- Daily task limits apply on a rolling 24-hour window; at the limit you cannot start new tasks but can still review existing ones.
- Paid plans come through Google AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions, currently only for individual @gmail.com accounts; business users are directed to an interest form.
- Limits and features may change as the product evolves.
