Kilo Code
Open-source AI coding agent for IDEs, terminal, cloud and Slack
- Tool type
- Open-source AI coding agent
- Made for
- Developers and engineering teams
- Runs on
- VS Code, JetBrains, CLI, cloud, Slack
- Desktop app (beta) on macOS, Windows and Linux; web app available.
What it does
Kilo Code is an open-source AI coding agent that works in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, the command line, Cloud Agents and Slack. You give it a task or question, and it reads relevant files, edits code and can run commands such as tests. Output appears as code changes, diffs, plans and explanations in a chat-style interface.
Developers can choose from agents such as Code, Plan, Debug and Ask, and use Auto Model to route requests by tier. You can also bring your own provider keys or run local models through Ollama or LM Studio. A desktop app is available in beta for macOS, Windows and Linux.
Kilo suits individual developers and engineering teams who want a model-agnostic agent. Individuals can start for free, while Teams and Enterprise plans add collaboration and governance features. Model inference and cloud compute are billed separately from the platform plan, so usage costs depend on how you run it.
What it can do
- Code, Plan, Debug and Ask agents that read and edit code in the editor or terminal
- Auto Model routing across Efficient, Frontier and Free tiers
- Bring-your-own-key and local model support (Ollama, LM Studio)
- Cloud Agents that run from a browser and hand off work from local sessions
- Code Reviewer for review workflows
- MCP support, per the FAQ on the homepage
Works with
- VS Code
- Cursor, Windsurf and Open VSX editors
- IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm and WebStorm (JetBrains)
- Slack
- GitHub
- Bitbucket and Jira (Teams/Enterprise features)
Example workflows
- Fix a flaky test
- Input: a failing spec file. Steps: the agent reads the relevant files, identifies a race in the price render, replaces a sleep with a readiness check and reruns the test repeatedly. Output: a diff to checkout.spec.ts and a test run log.
- Plan a feature before coding
- Input: a feature request. Steps: the Plan agent produces structured guidance for the change, then the Code agent implements it. Output: a plan document followed by code edits to the codebase.
Before you choose
- Model inference is billed separately from the platform plan; Auto Free and BYOK options avoid hosted credit purchases.
- Cloud compute is usage-based (for example Code Review and Cloud Agent rates) and charged on top of inference.
- The Desktop app is in beta, and full cloud compute pricing is on a separate page.
