- Tool type
- Agentic AI coding assistant
- Made for
- Professional developers and software teams
- Runs on
- Desktop IDE, CLI, web and mobile
- Kiro Web sessions run in isolated cloud sandboxes and continue after you close your laptop.
What it does
Kiro takes a natural-language prompt and turns it into requirements, an architectural design, and sequenced implementation tasks, then executes those tasks with agents. It works across an IDE, a terminal CLI, a browser-based web interface, a mobile app, and Kiro Crew, an open-source workspace that runs on your machine. Inputs include code repositories, steering files that describe your project, and external context from tools such as Figma or Terraform.
In practice, developers use specs to write down intent before code is generated, then review the requirements and tasks, and run property-based tests that check rules across many inputs rather than a few examples. Kiro can run agent hooks on file or task events, run the headless CLI in CI/CD to review pull requests, and continue cloud sessions after the laptop closes. Auto selects a model per task, while manual choices include Claude, GPT-5.6, and open-weight models, each with a credit multiplier.
Kiro suits professional developers and software teams, with a free tier for individuals who sign up with social login or AWS Builder ID and paid plans from $20 per user per month. Enterprise features such as SSO and centralized billing require a paid plan and contact with sales for larger organizations. Limitations include credit-based usage that varies by model and task complexity, the free tier not being available for enterprise or GovCloud, and GovCloud pricing about 20% higher.
What it can do
- Turns prompts into requirements, architecture designs, and sequenced tasks through spec-driven development
- Runs property-based tests that check rules across many inputs, aimed at edge cases unit tests miss
- Executes tasks with parallel agents on a local machine or in isolated cloud sandboxes
- Offers Auto model selection plus manual choices among Claude, GPT-5.6, and open-weight models
- Runs a headless CLI for reviewing pull requests and fixing bugs in CI/CD
- Supports agent hooks that run predefined actions when file or task events occur
Works with
- GitHub
- GitLab
- Figma
- Terraform
- AWS IAM Identity Center
- Open VSX extensions

Example workflows
- Spec-driven feature build
- Input: a feature description such as adding user authentication. Steps: Kiro generates requirements with acceptance criteria, then a design, then a tasks file; the user reviews and executes tasks one by one. Output: a requirements doc, design doc, and tracked task list alongside the code.
- Automated test and documentation hook
- Input: a hook set to trigger when a React component file is saved. Steps: the hook runs in the background and creates or updates the matching test file. Output: updated tests generated alongside the saved component without a manual step.
Before you choose
- Credit use depends on the model and task: Auto is the 1x baseline, while Claude Opus 5 is 2.2x and GPT-5.6 Sol is 4.4x, so cost varies with the model you choose.
- Free tier access to Claude Sonnet 4.5 and open-weight models is subject to rate limits, and the free tier is not available in Kiro Enterprise or AWS GovCloud (US).
- Third-party automation harnesses that route requests outside Kiro's native interfaces are not permitted under the subscription terms.
