Leonardo API
REST API for generating images, video, 3D and audio, with code exported from Leonardo's web app
- Tool type
- Image and video generation API
- Made for
- Developers, founders, product teams
- Runs on
- Hosted REST API
- Your application makes authenticated requests; web-app subscriptions are separate.
What it does
The Leonardo API takes text prompts, input images (for image-to-image or as a Start Frame for video) and generation parameters such as size, style, model and number of images. It returns generated images and video clips, and the landing page also lists 3D and audio models. Some video models return clips with synchronized sound. Jobs return a generationId that you use to fetch results, or you can set a webhook callback.
Its distinguishing feature is a design-first workflow: you tune a generation visually in the Leonardo web app with sliders and controls, then use the Get API Code feature to export it as runnable API code with the same parameters. Blueprints provide working examples such as mood boards, bulk resizing, product mockups and upscaling. One integration covers text-to-image, image-to-image, text-to-video and image-to-video, plus features like LoRA training, custom presets and upscaling. Leonardo also offers custom model, implementation and integration help.
It suits developers, founders and product teams who want to add media generation to an app. You need a Leonardo.Ai account, purchased API credits (separate from web app subscriptions) and an API key, which must stay server-side. Billing is in dollars against a credit balance. Published rates, rate limits and concurrency caps are documented separately; check them before committing to a volume.
What it can do
- Text-to-image and image-to-image generation via REST
- Text-to-video and image-to-video (Start Frame) generation
- Upscaling, LoRA training and custom presets
- Export web app generations as ready-to-use API code
- Webhook callbacks for generation results
- Blueprints with working examples for common use cases
Example workflows
- Design in the app, ship via API
- Inputs: a prompt, model and style settings tuned in the web app. Steps: adjust sliders until the output looks right, use Get API Code to export the request, run it from your backend with your API key. Output: generated images matching the settings you previewed.
- Animate a still into a clip
- Inputs: a source image and a motion prompt. Steps: pass the image as a Start Frame to an image-to-video model, set a webhook URL, wait for the callback. Output: a video clip returned for your app to fetch.
Before you choose
- API access and credits are separate from free or web app subscriptions; usage is billed in dollars from a credit balance.
- Keep the API key out of client-side code and be aware of concurrency limits and usage caps.
- Available models change as the platform adds them, so confirm current model support in the documentation.
