LMQL
Program language-model prompts with types and constraints
- Tool type
- Language and runtime for LLM programming
- Made for
- Developers and researchers designing model interactions
- Runs on
- Python installation and playground IDE
What it does
LMQL is a programming language and runtime for structured interactions with language models. It combines prompt templates with Python control flow, typed variables and constraints on generation. Nested queries let developers reuse prompt components and organize a larger interaction into smaller pieces.
Programs can target supported hosted or local backends, including OpenAI, Transformers and llama.cpp. LMQL is useful for developers experimenting with controlled generation rather than writing a single unstructured prompt. Backend support and available constraints differ, so test against the chosen model; local models require a local installation and suitable compute.
What it can do
- Prompt templates
- Typed generation
- Output constraints
- Python control flow
- Nested queries
- Multiple model backends
Works with
- OpenAI
- Transformers
- llama.cpp
Before you choose
- Current installation instructions specify Python 3.10.
- Supported constraints and execution behavior depend on the backend.
- Model APIs and local compute are separate costs.
Listed under
Get started
- Install LMQL using the documented Python environment.
- Choose a supported backend and configure model access.
- Write a query with constraints and inspect its output.
Plans and prices
Apache 2.0 software; model API usage or local compute is additional.
