What it does
mcp-use Inspector is a developer application for testing MCP tools, resources, prompts and connections. It shows request and response data and JSON-RPC traffic, and previews MCP Apps or MCP-UI widgets. Developers can connect remote servers in the hosted browser version or run the Inspector locally for development.
The same tool can be self-hosted through npx, including headless use. Its optional chat interface connects server tools to a language model using the user’s own API key. It is useful for diagnosing protocol or widget behavior before a release. Provider calls made through chat incur their own costs, and final compatibility should still be tested in the intended AI client.
What it can do
- MCP tool testing
- Resource browsing
- Prompt testing
- JSON-RPC logs
- Widget previews
- Multiple transports
- BYO-key model chat
Before you choose
- The optional model chat uses a separate provider API key.
- An Inspector preview does not replace testing in the target client.
