What it does

Copilot Studio takes in business processes, data sources, and instructions described in natural language or built in a graphical interface, and produces agents, workflows, and apps that answer questions, take actions, or run automated tasks. Builders can choose from selected AI models, connect agents to apps, files, and systems through pre-built connectors and MCP servers, and combine deterministic workflow automation with agent reasoning in the same system.

Teams typically design an agent, test it with structured evaluations, and publish it to channels such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, websites, apps, or social platforms. Distinctive features include multi-agent orchestration, development-test-production lifecycle controls with approval gates, environment-based access policies, audit logs flowing into Microsoft Purview, and real-time analytics on agent performance.

Copilot Studio suits business builders, IT teams, and developers in organizations with Microsoft 365 or Azure environments. Access starts with a Microsoft sign-in or a free Azure trial, while agents published outside Microsoft 365 need a standalone plan. Usage is metered in Copilot Credits, an Azure subscription is required to run agents, and product availability varies by market.

What it can do

  • Create conversational chat or voice agents that answer questions and guide workflows in natural language.
  • Build autonomous agents that plan, manage tasks, and escalate work items when needed.
  • Mix traditional workflow automation with agentic reasoning in one system.
  • Run structured, automated evaluations to test agent performance.
  • Use multi-agent orchestration to route tasks between specialized agents.
  • Monitor real-time analytics and manage the Dev-Test-Prod lifecycle with version control and approval gates.

Works with

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot (publishing target)
  • Microsoft Teams and SharePoint (channels referenced in FAQ)
  • Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft Defender (security)
  • Microsoft Purview Compliance Audit (audit logs)
  • Azure AI Foundry and Azure AI Search (models and knowledge)
  • Power Platform connectors, including 1500+ pre-built data connectors
  • MCP servers

Example workflows

Internal IT support triage
Input: employee support requests from a channel. Steps: the agent collects ticket details, creates tickets, triages by category, and posts status updates. Output: created and triaged tickets with communication sent to the requester.
Contract risk review
Input: a contract uploaded from a file source. Steps: the agent checks clauses against a policy knowledge source, flags deviations, and recommends changes. Output: a list of identified risks and suggested edits for legal review.

Before you choose

  • Agents built for outside channels require a standalone Copilot Studio plan; Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses cover internal use in Microsoft 365.
  • Usage is billed in Copilot Credits, so variable workloads should be budgeted using the pre-purchase plan or pay-as-you-go meter.
  • Availability differs by market, and the pricing page notes the product is not available in some regions.
