Murf API
Text-to-speech and speech-to-text APIs for building voice agents and voiceovers
- Tool type
- Text-to-speech and speech-to-text API suite
- Made for
- Developers building voice applications
- Runs on
- Cloud REST API with Python SDK
- Called over HTTP from your own application; the API console is for setup, not runtime.
What it does
Murf API is a set of developer APIs that turn text into speech and live audio into text. Text-to-speech takes a script and returns audio from a library of 150+ voices across 35 languages, with control over pitch, speed, prosody, and audio duration. Speech-to-text (Beta) takes live audio and returns transcription in 12 languages. Dubbing and voice changer endpoints convert existing audio or video, and a translation API translates text before speech generation.
Developers use the APIs to add speech generation and transcription to applications, or to prepare voiceovers and localized audio. Falcon is intended for real-time streaming conversations, while Gen2 addresses expressive non-streaming synthesis. Custom pronunciation helps with brand names and specialist vocabulary. The application must provide its own conversation logic and any external model or telephony connections.
Murf API suits developers building voice applications and teams automating audio production. Create an account, obtain an API key and follow the REST or Python examples for the chosen endpoint. Rates and language coverage differ by service. Gen2 streaming has been decommissioned, while its non-streaming endpoints remain available; speech-to-text is labeled Beta. Check the endpoint-specific limits and commercial terms before production use.
What it can do
- Generate speech from text with configurable voices and pronunciation
- Stream speech through Falcon for conversational applications
- Use Gen2 for non-streaming expressive speech synthesis
- Dub existing audio or video through the appropriate endpoint
- Transform recordings with the voice-changer endpoint
- Transcribe live audio with the Beta speech-to-text service
Example workflows
- Speak an application response
- Illustrative example. Supply response text from your application, send it to a Falcon streaming endpoint and play the returned audio. Handle the surrounding conversation and telephony connection in your application.
- Localized voiceover
- Illustrative example. Input: English script and target language. Steps: call the translation API, then generate speech with a library voice in the target language. Output: audio file in the target language.
Before you choose
- Falcon 2.1 is optimized for real-time streaming; Gen2 is no longer available for streaming and remains available via Synthesize or non-streaming endpoints.
- Speech-to-text is in Beta and supports 12 languages.
- Voice Isolator is listed as coming soon on the homepage.
