n8n
Visual workflow and AI agent builder you can host yourself or run in n8n Cloud
- Tool type
- Workflow and AI agent automation platform
- Made for
- Developers, IT and ops teams
- Runs on
- n8n Cloud or self-hosted
- Self-host via Docker/on-prem; Community Edition on GitHub
What it does
n8n takes in triggers such as webhooks, schedules, queues or chat messages, and runs the steps you connect to them: app integrations, code steps in JavaScript or Python, API requests, and AI agent nodes. The result is an automated workflow or agent whose steps and past runs you can open and inspect. A built-in MCP server also lets AI clients search, run and edit workflows.
People build flows in a visual editor, such as a refund request that looks up an order, asks for approval in Slack and branches by outcome. Distinctive points are the human approval option for AI tool calls, replaying past runs, version history and Git-based control, and the choice between n8n-hosted Cloud and self-hosting. Pricing counts whole workflow executions, not individual steps.
It suits developers, IT, security and operations teams who want automation with visibility and governance. Start with a Cloud account, or self-host the Community Edition from GitHub. Limits: full MCP workflow operations require enablement, individually or in bulk, and respect user access and client permissions, and connecting cloud-based AI clients needs a publicly reachable instance. Agents and the Assistant are in preview, and the Business plan is self-hosted only.
What it can do
- Visual builder for workflows and AI agents with JavaScript/Python code steps
- Webhook, schedule and queue triggers plus custom HTTP/GraphQL API requests
- AI Agent nodes with human approval for tool calls
- Built-in MCP server to search, run, create and edit workflows from AI clients
- Execution logs, error workflows, version history and replay of past runs
- Enterprise governance: SSO/LDAP, audit logs, log streaming, external secret stores
Works with
- Claude Desktop
- Claude Code
- ChatGPT
- Cursor
- VS Code
- Slack
- OpenAI
- Anthropic
Example workflows
- Refund approval via Slack
- Input: a refund request trigger. Steps: look up the order, classify the reason, ask for approval in Slack, then branch. Output: refund processed or ticket opened, customer confirmed, and the refund recorded.
- Control workflows from an AI client
- Input: an enabled workflow and an MCP client such as Claude Desktop. Steps: enable MCP access, copy the Server URL, authenticate via OAuth, mark the workflow available. Output: the client can search, trigger and test that workflow.
Before you choose
- Pricing is per whole workflow execution, regardless of step count; Business is self-hosted only.
- MCP clients do not have separate workflow allowlists, but visibility remains limited by the connected user’s access and granted permissions. Workflows can be enabled individually or in bulk; search can return previews of other accessible workflows. A gradually rolling-out setting can auto-enable new workflows and is off by default.
- Agents and the Assistant are in preview and may change.
