What it does

OpenWork is an open-source desktop workspace for knowledge workers and teams who want AI agents to work with files and tools. On desktop, users authorize a folder, choose a provider or local model, then give the app a task; it can read files and produce drafts or other task outputs. The product also includes a browser-based workspace, team administration, and gateways for model access and MCP-connected skills and tools.

Documented capabilities include chatting with files and tools, running tasks across supported models, using local models, scheduling tasks (listed as alpha), and sharing skills or connectors with an organization. The desktop app is offered for macOS, Windows, and Linux; the web app runs in a browser. Getting started locally requires downloading the app, choosing an authorized folder, and selecting a model. Users can sign in with ChatGPT, provide an API key, or run a local model.

The desktop app is free and requires no account to start, but users bring their own model-provider credentials unless using another supported sign-in or local model. Free team use supports up to five users. Paid Team features and managed inference have separate terms. OpenWork says desktop files stay on the machine while prompts go to the selected model provider; hosted cloud workers are optional. Browser automation is listed as a capability, while dispatch from a phone and live artifacts are marked coming soon, not available features.
