Pictory API
Automated AI video generation through a developer API, with a separate MCP connector for AI assistants.
- Tool type
- AI video generation API
- Made for
- Developers and organizations automating video
- Runs on
- Pictory cloud API and web account
- Requests go to the Pictory API endpoint; the account and API key are managed on the Pictory web app.
What it does
Pictory API takes in text, blog URLs, PowerPoint presentations, and existing videos, and produces AI-generated videos with narration, captions, and branding. Developers send a request with a video name and content, receive a job ID immediately, and poll the job for rendering status, since rendering is asynchronous.
Teams use it to automate video production inside their own systems, for example building personalized videos from templates or turning lesson plans and training documents into narrated course videos. The docs also describe an MCP connector that lets AI assistants create videos using a Pictory sign-in, without an API key or API subscription; that route is separate from direct API use.
It suits developers and organizations that want programmatic video creation. Direct API use requires a Pictory account, an API subscription, and an API key kept private. Pictory 3.0 users can create only Motion Graphics videos through MCP, and 2.0 users only Standard videos.
What it can do
- Text-to-video generation from written content through the API
- AI storyboard that designs scene layouts, on-screen text, and color palettes
- Blog-to-video conversion from article content
- PowerPoint-to-video conversion
- Video highlights that extract short clips from long videos
- AI voice-overs and automatic subtitles in multiple languages
Works with
- AWS S3 (auto-upload, per docs introduction)
- Vimeo (auto-upload, per docs introduction)
Example workflows
- Text to video via API
- Input: a video name and a text passage. Steps: send a POST request to the storyboard render endpoint with the API key in the Authorization header. Output: a job ID, which is polled until rendering completes.
- Course video from training material
- Input: lesson plan or slides submitted as text or PowerPoint. Steps: convert the material through the API with narration and branding settings, then auto-publish to a learning platform. Output: narrated instructional videos ready for an LMS.
Before you choose
- API key grants full account access to create videos; treat it like a password.
- Direct API use needs an API subscription; the MCP connector needs only a Pictory sign-in, and Pictory 3.0 MCP is limited to Motion Graphics videos.
