Poe API
One OpenAI-compatible endpoint for hundreds of models, billed against Poe subscription points
- Tool type
- Model inference API
- Made for
- Developers
- Runs on
- Poe-hosted API
- Called over HTTPS from Python, Node.js, cURL or any language; no local install needed
What it does
Poe API sends prompts and supported multimodal inputs to models and bots through a shared API. Its OpenAI-compatible endpoint is api.poe.com/v1, with Chat Completions and Responses formats. The wider API also exposes image, video and audio generation routes. Input formats and parameter support depend on the endpoint and chosen model; compatibility does not mean every OpenAI feature is supported.
Developers use it by pointing an existing OpenAI SDK (Python or Node.js), the fastapi-poe Python SDK, or plain HTTP calls at Poe's base URL with a Poe API key. It also works with coding tools configured as OpenAI-compatible providers, such as Cline, Roo Code and the LLM command-line tool. The distinguishing feature is one key and one interface for models from many providers, charged against Poe subscription points instead of separate provider accounts.
It suits developers who want to compare or switch models without rewriting code. An active Poe subscription and an API key from poe.com/api/keys are required. Limits include 500 requests per minute, no private bot access, structured outputs via response_format not supported in Chat Completions, a strict-mode setting for function calling that is ignored, audio input not supported, and many unsupported parameters silently ignored.
What it can do
- Chat Completions and Responses API endpoints compatible with OpenAI SDKs
- Streaming responses and tool calling with tool_choice and parallel tool calls
- Reasoning controls, built-in web search and multi-turn continuation via the Responses API
- File inputs: images, PDFs, audio and video passed as base64 data URLs
- Access to text, image, video and audio generation models and public community bots
- Python SDK (fastapi-poe) as an alternative to the OpenAI SDK
Works with
- Cline
- Roo Code
- LLM (command-line tool)
- Cursor
- Continue
Example workflows
- Compare models on one prompt
- Input: a Poe API key and a test prompt. Steps: set the OpenAI SDK base URL to https://api.poe.com/v1, loop over model names such as Claude-Sonnet-4.6 and GPT-5.4, send the same message to each. Output: one response per model for side-by-side review.
- Power a coding assistant with Poe models
- Input: Poe API key and a model ID. Steps: install Cline in VS Code, choose OpenAI Compatible as provider, enter the Poe base URL, key and model ID. Output: an in-editor coding agent running on the chosen Poe model.
Before you choose
- Usage draws on Poe subscription points and is capped at 500 requests per minute; check your balance, since a zero balance returns a 402 error
- Compatibility is partial: several OpenAI parameters are ignored and structured outputs via response_format are unsupported in Chat Completions
- Only public bots are reachable; private bots are not supported, and media bots work best with streaming off

Generate a key at poe.com/api/keys; an active Poe subscription is needed for model access
- Create an API key at poe.com/api/keys and store it in an environment variable
- Confirm your Poe subscription is active so models can be called
- Set the base URL to https://api.poe.com/v1 in the OpenAI SDK, or install fastapi-poe, and send a test request
