What it does
Tabnine is an AI coding assistant that runs inside your development environment and connects to your repositories and development systems. It provides real-time code completions while you type, and a chat interface for questions about your codebase and coding tasks. Tabnine Agent can be used through the CLI or IDE to carry out coding tasks.
Developers install the Tabnine plugin in their IDE, sign up or join a Tabnine team, and activate the plugin with their user. Completions suggest code from current context, including full-function implementations, and Tabnine Chat handles higher-level requests through natural-language prompts, built-in actions, or CodeLens. Administrators can review usage, manage teams and users, and govern how the organization uses Tabnine.
Tabnine suits engineering teams using supported IDEs and organizations with private deployment requirements. Tricentis announced its acquisition on July 30, 2026, and the current Tabnine documentation still describes installation and coding-agent use. Public commercial pages now redirect to Tricentis, so confirm new-account access, current plans and deployment terms before adoption. Existing teams should follow their installation arrangement and review generated code and agent actions before accepting changes.

Example workflows
- Completing a function from a doc comment
- Illustrative example. Input: a documentation comment describing a function in the IDE. Steps: write the comment, let Tabnine suggest a full-function implementation, accept or partially accept it. Output: suggested code inserted into the editor.
- Asking Tabnine Chat about the codebase
- Illustrative example. Input: selected code and a natural-language question. Steps: launch Tabnine Chat from the IDE, ask or instruct it using built-in actions or CodeLens, review the answer, apply it if useful. Output: an answer that can be applied to the code.
Before you choose
- Chat model is trained mainly on code with a small English text subset; English is the primary supported language.
- Completions are designed for code context, not high-level design or general questions; use Chat for those.
- Installation steps differ between Tabnine SaaS and private installation; confirm with your team which applies.
