- Tool type
- Open-source unstructured-data pipeline framework
- Made for
- Developers and ML engineers
- Runs on
- Python on local machines, servers and Docker
- Runs as a Python package; the Triton engine targets Docker containers on CPU or GPU.
What it does
Towhee is an open-source Python framework for processing unstructured data such as images, video, audio, text and molecular structures. It takes raw inputs and produces outputs such as embeddings, text or other formats, which can then be loaded into a storage system like a vector database.
Developers can start from pre-built pipelines for tasks like sentence embedding, image embedding, video deduplication or question answering over documents, or build custom pipelines with its method-chaining DataCollection API. A Triton-based engine can package a Python pipeline into a Docker container, and Operators wrap models from libraries such as torch, timm and transformers behind a standard interface.
Towhee is aimed at ML engineers and developers who want to prototype data-processing pipelines in Python and then deploy them. It requires Python 3.7+ and installs with pip (pip install towhee towhee.models). It is a code framework rather than an end-user application, so usage requires writing Python.
What it can do
- Encode images, video, audio, text and other unstructured data into embeddings
- Use pre-trained embedding models across CV, NLP, multimodal, audio and medical fields
- Build custom pipelines with a Pythonic method-chaining API and DataCollection operations such as map, filter and window
- Run prebuilt pipelines such as sentence embedding, image embedding, video deduplication and question answering with documents
- Serve models with a Triton-based engine on CPU or GPU and package pipelines into Docker containers
Works with
- Milvus (suggested vector database for storing embeddings)
- Model libraries including torch, timm and transformers
- Triton Inference Server with TensorRT, PyTorch and ONNX
Example workflows
- Sentence embedding with a pre-built pipeline
- Input: a list of sentences. Steps: load the sentence_embedding config, set the model and device, create the pipeline, call batch on the sentences. Output: an embedding vector for each sentence.
- Text-to-image search with a custom pipeline
- Input: image files and a text query. Steps: decode images, embed them with CLIP, normalize, insert into a FAISS index; then embed the text query and search the index. Output: the top matching images for the query.
Before you choose
- Towhee is a developer framework; using it requires writing Python code rather than a graphical interface.
- Model choice and hardware (CPU or GPU) affect speed; the project states up to 10x faster execution for optimized pipelines.
- Storing and searching embeddings requires a separate system such as Milvus or FAISS.

Get started
Run pip install towhee towhee.models, then follow the quick start guide.
- Confirm Python 3.7 or later is installed.
- Run pip install towhee towhee.models to install the framework and model package.
- Run a pre-built pipeline such as sentence_embedding from the quick start guide to verify the install.
Plans and prices
The software can be installed under its repository license. Infrastructure and model-provider charges remain separate. Optional commercial hosting and support have their own terms.
Towhee is free to use. See their pricing page ↗
