AI Gateway
One API key to route requests to 400+ AI models with fallbacks and spend tracking
- Tool type
- AI model gateway API
- Made for
- Developers building AI apps
- Runs on
- Hosted API, dashboard and CLI
- Endpoint at ai-gateway.vercel.sh; keys managed in Vercel dashboard or CLI
What it does
AI Gateway is Vercel's API layer for calling AI models from many providers through one endpoint and one API key. It takes in requests for text, image, video, audio, realtime, embeddings, reranking and tool use, and returns the provider model's output. It also produces unified billing, request logs and usage reporting across providers.
Developers use it through the AI SDK, OpenAI Chat Completions, OpenAI Responses or Anthropic Messages formats, and moving an existing app is described as a base URL swap. Routing can fail over to the same model on another provider during an outage, or send requests to cheaper or faster models. Distinguishing points: tokens are billed at provider list price with no markup, bring-your-own-key is supported, and controls cover budgets, Zero Data Retention routing and provider allowlists.
It suits developers and teams that call several model providers and want one integration, one invoice and visibility into spend. Setup requires a Vercel account and an API key (or OIDC tokens). Limits: it is an API rather than a standalone chat app, some capabilities sit at higher plan tiers and are metered separately, and current per-model rates must be checked in the pricing docs.
What it can do
- Call 400+ models across text, image, video, audio, realtime, embeddings and reranking with one API key
- Automatic failover to the same model on another provider during outages
- Routing aimed at availability, cost or latency
- Budgets at team, project and API key level, plus request logs and usage dashboards
- Zero Data Retention routing, no-training routing and team-wide provider allowlists
- Bring your own provider keys with no platform fee
Works with
- AI SDK
- OpenAI Chat Completions
- OpenAI Responses
- Anthropic Messages
- Claude Code
- Codex
- OpenCode
- Command Code
Example workflows
- Migrate an existing OpenAI-based app
- Input: an app using the OpenAI SDK. Steps: create an AI Gateway API key in the Vercel dashboard, swap the base URL and key, choose a provider/model name. Output: the same calls served through the gateway with unified billing and logs.
- Add failover and spend caps
- Input: a production feature calling one model. Steps: configure fallback and routing, set a budget on the API key, tag requests. Output: requests that reroute during a provider outage, with spend visible by tag.
Before you choose
- Token prices pass through at provider list rates, but some capabilities are metered separately and may need higher Vercel plan tiers
- Sending traffic through a gateway adds a dependency; Zero Data Retention only applies to providers under a ZDR agreement
- Virtual models were announced on 28 October 2026 and may still be new
