What it does

Model Studio takes prompts, images, audio or video and returns generated text, images, video, speech, transcripts, embeddings or reranked results from hosted models. It offers the Qwen series plus third-party models such as DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM through Qwen APIs and OpenAI-compatible APIs, so there is no infrastructure to manage. It also includes a Knowledge Base (RAG) feature and a structured Decision Model for classification and scoring.

Developers typically try a model in the console's Experience Center, then call it from code by changing the API key, base URL and model name in existing OpenAI-style programs. The Qwen line spans Max, Plus and Flash tiers for different cost and speed needs. It can also be connected to developer tools, and a fixed-fee Coding Plan covers AI coding tools. Regions differ in endpoints, supported models and pricing, and API keys are not interchangeable between them.

It suits developers and teams building applications on hosted models, and those moving existing OpenAI-based code. Activation is free and an Alibaba Cloud account is needed; billing is pay-as-you-go once any free quota is used. New users who have not completed their profile cannot continue after the quota runs out. Model availability varies by region (for example, DeepSeek is listed for China (Beijing) only), and Knowledge Base is billed separately from model inference.

Example workflows

Migrate an OpenAI-based app
Input: existing code using the OpenAI SDK. Steps: create an API key in your chosen region, set the regional base URL with your workspace ID, change the model name to a Qwen model. Output: chat completions served by Model Studio.
Compare models before building
Input: a sample prompt. Steps: open the console, go to the Experience Center, select a model, run the prompt and check usage in the monitoring page. Output: a model choice informed by response quality and token use.

Before you choose

  • API keys, endpoints, supported models and pricing differ by region
  • Enable the Free quota only switch (new users, Singapore region) to avoid unexpected pay-as-you-go charges
  • Knowledge Base is billed separately and does not support savings plans or resource plans
