Amazon SageMaker AI
AWS service for customizing, training, deploying, and governing machine learning and generative AI models.
- Tool type
- Machine learning development platform
- Made for
- Data scientists and ML engineers
- Runs on
- AWS cloud and SageMaker Studio
- Inference can run on dedicated SageMaker endpoints or serverless via Amazon Bedrock.
What it does
Amazon SageMaker AI takes in training data, a chosen model or framework (such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX), and a container, and produces customized model weights, managed training jobs, and deployed inference endpoints. Teams can also use JumpStart's pre-optimized models as a starting point. The service covers data preparation, training, deployment, and MLOps within one governed lifecycle.
People use SageMaker AI to fine-tune foundation models, run distributed training on GPU clusters through HyperPod, and deploy models to dedicated endpoints with multi-model packing and scale-to-zero. Its distinct feature is control: teams keep ownership of model weights and choose the serving runtime and GPU type, while SageMaker Studio provides one environment for notebooks, governance, and deployment.
SageMaker AI suits ML teams at enterprises, ISVs, and AI-native startups that need to build and operate their own models. Access is through the AWS console, which requires an AWS account, and costs are pay-as-you-go with no minimum fees, plus charges for underlying AWS services. Teams that only need serverless access to hosted models may find Amazon Bedrock a simpler fit.
What it can do
- Customize foundation and open-weight models with serverless fine-tuning techniques while keeping model weights.
- Run distributed training on managed GPU clusters with SageMaker HyperPod, supporting both Slurm and Kubernetes.
- Deploy models to managed inference endpoints with multi-model packing, scale-to-zero, and blue/green or rolling deployments with auto-rollback.
- Use SageMaker Studio with JupyterLab or VS Code for notebooks, data preparation, and an AI coding agent.
- Track experiments with MLflow and monitor models with Model Monitor and CloudWatch.
- Govern models with a Model Registry using IAM-enforced approval gates and Clarify for bias detection.
Works with
- Amazon Bedrock (serverless inference option for frontier and open-weight models)
- AWS Glue Data Catalog and Amazon S3 (data sources)
- Amazon Redshift (data warehouse access)
- MLflow, Grafana, Prometheus, CloudWatch (monitoring and tracking)
- JupyterLab and VS Code (IDEs)
Example workflows
- Fine-tune an open-weight model on proprietary data
- Inputs: a chosen open-weight model, a labeled dataset in Amazon S3, and a training configuration. Steps: prepare data in SageMaker Studio, run a customization job, evaluate the result, then register it in the Model Registry. Output: customized model weights stored under the team's control, ready for deployment.
- Deploy a trained model to a managed endpoint
- Inputs: a registered model artifact and a chosen instance type. Steps: create an endpoint configuration, deploy with a blue/green or rolling strategy, and monitor drift with Model Monitor. Output: a live inference endpoint with rollback if the new release fails.
Before you choose
- Pricing is pay-as-you-go across instances, storage, and data processing, and the exact rates are on a separate SageMaker AI pricing page that was not verified here.
- Choose SageMaker AI when you need control over weights, infrastructure, and GPU types; the page recommends Amazon Bedrock when serverless access to hosted models is enough.
- Compliance claims such as HIPAA and FedRAMP should be checked against AWS compliance documentation before relying on them.

Get started
The getting-started page links to hands-on tutorials and the console.
- Create or sign in to an AWS account and open the SageMaker AI console from the getting-started page.
- Choose a starting path: a tutorial for building a model, JumpStart for pre-built models, or Studio for a full environment.
- Connect your data source (such as S3 or the AWS Glue Data Catalog) and select an instance type sized to your workload before running training or deployment.
Plans and prices
Prices in USDSageMaker AI charges are based on instance usage, storage, data processing, deployment, and MLOps, plus any underlying AWS service charges. Consult the SageMaker AI pricing page for current rates.
- Instance usage for training, hosting, and notebooks
- Storage for notebooks, EBS, and S3
