What it does
Comet is a Chromium-based web browser from Perplexity with an AI assistant built in. It takes in the pages you have open, your browsing history, and plain-language requests. It produces answers about page content, summaries of long pages, tab-management actions, email drafts, study plans, and agentic task results such as navigating a site or attempting a purchase. Perplexity search is the default search engine.
People use it like an ordinary browser, with bookmarks, page translation, most Chrome extensions and a built-in ad blocker, and call on the assistant when needed. An Ask button answers questions about the current page, and a Summarize button condenses long content. Personal Search looks through your browsing history, and a Gmail connector handles email and calendar queries. Max subscribers can run several agentic tasks in parallel from a Background Assistants page.
It suits students, researchers and professionals who want AI help inside the browser rather than a separate chat tool. Comet is a free download for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and importing data from another browser is supported. Background Assistants need a Max subscription. Because the assistant can act on pages for you, such as emailing or shopping, you will want to review confirmations before it proceeds.
