What it does

DeepL Translator takes typed or pasted text and translates it between languages, with automatic source-language detection and a dictionary for some language pairs. You can also drag in PDF, Word (.docx) and PowerPoint (.pptx) files for document translation. Paid plans add glossaries, shared style rule lists, saved translations and a formal/informal tone option. Output is the translated text or a translated file, which DeepL says keeps the original formatting and layout, including tables, headers and images.

People use it in the web translator, a Windows app, or browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge that translate whole pages and work inside Gmail and Google Docs. A DeepL-hosted MCP connector also lets Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude and other MCP-capable assistants call DeepL for text and document translation, applying your glossaries and style rules. DeepL states that texts sent to it are not used to train its models, and that Pro data is stored temporarily and then deleted.

It suits individuals, teams and organisations that translate regularly and want terminology consistency. A free version exists with lower limits, such as 50,000 characters per month and 3 file translations of up to 5 MB. Individual and Team plans offer a 30-day trial, and trials are not available to users who previously had one. Higher volumes need paid plans; the Business plan carries a fair usage policy and the Enterprise plan is by contact with sales. Admins must enable the MCP connector for an organisation.

Example workflows

Translate a contract draft
Input: a .docx file. Steps: drag it into the document translator, choose the target language, and apply a glossary of company terms if your plan includes one. Output: a translated Word file that keeps the original layout.
Translate from inside an AI assistant
Input: a batch of messages or a document in Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot. Steps: add the DeepL connector, sign in to your DeepL account once, and ask the assistant to translate using your style rules. Output: translated text or a translated file returned in the chat.

Before you choose

  • Free and Individual plans cap characters, file translations and file size, so heavy document work may need a higher plan.
  • Glossaries, shared style rules, translation memory and unlimited use vary by plan; unlimited tiers carry a fair usage policy.
  • The MCP connector needs a DeepL account, and organisation admins control whether it is enabled.
