What it does

Gemini is Google's AI assistant app, an interface to a multimodal language model that works with text, audio, images and uploaded files. You type or speak a request, or upload documents, images or code, and it returns written answers, summaries, outlines, generated images, code, study guides or practice tests. Paid plans add video generation, Deep Research reports and assistant features inside other Google apps.

People use it to summarise long documents, draft emails and blog posts, debug code, prepare for exams, and research complex questions across many sources. Its distinguishing points are tight links to Google products (Gmail, Docs, Chrome, Drive storage bundled with plans), saved-instruction assistants called Gems, and a ladder of consumer, business and developer routes under one name. Users can review, export and delete their Gemini activity and switch off extensions.

It suits students, writers, office workers and developers who already live in a Google Account. The web app needs a supported browser, and some features work without signing in; saving activity requires a personal Google Account, an eligible work account or a school account enabled by an administrator. Paid Google AI plans need adults aged 18+. Google states that answers can be inaccurate or biased, so check facts. Usage limits apply and vary by plan, country and feature.
