What it does

IBM watsonx.ai takes in enterprise data, prompts and documents and produces machine learning models, Decision Optimization solutions, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) applications, tuned models, and model endpoints or AI services that applications can call. It includes a playground for prompting foundation models, tools for building agents and generating synthetic data, text extraction, and hosting for IBM and third-party models.

Teams use it to forecast, classify and detect anomalies, optimize planning and scheduling, build RAG search over governed company knowledge, and adapt models through prompting and tuning, including LoRA/QLoRA fine-tuning. Its distinguishing feature is putting predictive, prescriptive and generative AI in one studio, with a choice of models (IBM Granite plus Meta, Mistral, OpenAI gpt-oss, DeepSeek and others), frameworks and hybrid infrastructure, covering development through deployment, monitoring and retraining.

It suits enterprise data science, ML and application teams, though a free playground allowance makes it easy to try. Access starts with an IBM account sign-up for the trial. Costs are usage-based per token, per page or per GPU-hour, so budgeting requires checking the rate tables. Pricing and model availability may vary by country. Advanced support with SLAs is an extra cost, and the pricing page describes SaaS features only.

What it can do

  • Build machine learning models for forecasting, classification, risk and anomaly detection
  • Use Decision Optimization for planning, scheduling and resource allocation
  • Build RAG applications that retrieve business context
  • Customize models with prompt engineering and tuning, including LoRA/QLoRA
  • Host models and deploy endpoints on demand
  • Prompt models in PromptLab and build agents in AgentLab

Works with

  • watsonx Orchestrate
  • watsonx.data

Example workflows

Build a RAG assistant over company documents
Input: internal documents and governed data via watsonx.data. Steps: retrieve relevant context, prompt a chosen foundation model in the studio, test answers. Output: a deployed endpoint for applications.
Fine-tune a model for a specialized domain
Input: domain-specific training data and a base model. Steps: configure LoRA/QLoRA tuning, evaluate the tuned model, deploy it on hosted GPUs. Output: a customized model endpoint.

Before you choose

  • Costs vary by model, tokens, pages and GPU-hours; check the rate tables before scaling
  • Quoted prices are indicative and vary by country, excluding taxes
  • Advanced support with SLAs costs extra
