What it does

OpenWhispr turns speech into text for dictation and meeting notes. Its desktop app can run speech recognition on your computer, or use cloud transcription and your own provider keys. AI cleanup helps turn spoken phrasing into usable writing, while a custom dictionary learns names and terminology from corrections.

The open-source application is available for macOS, Windows and Linux, with an iOS companion on paid plans. Local dictation is unlimited on the free plan; hosted transcription and meeting recording have separate allowances. Paid tiers add more cloud usage, synchronization and account integrations. Choose the local or cloud route before recording sensitive material, and review names and action items before using a transcript as a record of a conversation.

What it can do

  • Local speech recognition
  • Cloud transcription
  • AI text cleanup
  • Custom dictionary
  • Botless meeting notes
  • Audio uploads

Before you choose

  • Provider API usage may cost extra when you bring your own keys.
  • Local dictation and hosted meeting-recording allowances are different entitlements.
