What it does
PyGPT is a Python desktop application for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Users can chat with supported cloud models or locally hosted Ollama models, attach files and other visual or media inputs, and receive responses, summaries, research results, generated images or video, and spoken replies. It also supports retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) over files, webpages, external sources, and conversation history.
For multi-step work, users can run agent workflows with primary, orchestrator, or swarm roles; invoke Python, IPython, system commands, and other tools; search the web; and schedule recurring tasks. The app includes an MCP connector manager and an extensible plugin system. It is aimed at people who want a configurable desktop workspace for AI chat, research, coding, and automation. Download the app or install it through PyPI; local models can be used without external API keys.
PyGPT is free and open source, but using cloud providers may require separate credentials and can incur provider-determined API or token charges. Requests may send prompts, context, attachments, or other inputs to the selected provider or enabled external services. A fully local setup may keep processing on-device depending on the model, plugins, tools, and integrations used. AI responses may be inaccurate and should be checked before important decisions.

Before you choose
- Cloud-provider access may require separate credentials and incurs costs, quotas, and usage rules set by that provider; agent and multimodal workflows can generate additional requests.
- Prompts, conversation context, attachments, and tool inputs may be transmitted to external providers or services; handling depends on the providers and integrations selected.
- AI-generated responses can be inaccurate or incomplete; verify important outputs.
