What it does

Sakana AI's developer API accepts text prompts and chat messages in OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic Messages formats and returns model responses. Fugu orchestrates multiple frontier models behind one endpoint, with variants including Fugu Ultra, Fugu Max, and Fugu Cyber. Sakana Namazu is a Japanese-focused model with built-in web search and code execution.

Developers typically call these models from custom applications through the standard OpenAI SDK, or launch Fugu inside Codex CLI or Claude Code with a provider configuration. 1. Create an API key in the Sakana developer console and store it securely, since it is shown only once.
2. Set the key as SAKANA_API_KEY and send a test request to https://api.sakana.ai/v1/chat/completions with model fugu or sakana-namazu.
3. Optionally install Fugu for Codex or Claude Code with the provided install command, or configure an OpenAI SDK client with base_url https://api.sakana.ai/v1.

Fugu Max and Namazu are billed per million input and output tokens; orchestration tokens are billed at standard rates. Web search and fetch are billed per call. Subscription tiers apply to the API Platform only and do not change Sakana Chat limits.
