What it does
Unblocked MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that gives coding agents access to organizational context drawn from connected code, pull requests, issues, docs, conversations, and production tools such as Datadog and Sentry. It exposes two read-only tools: context_research, which returns a synthesized answer with citations, and context_get_urls, which fetches content behind links an agent encounters.
Teams connect an agent once and let the server handle retrieval across systems. It maps relationships across sources, resolves conflicts between them, enforces permissions, and ranks results server-side before anything reaches the agent. Admins can also attach verified or self-hosted MCP servers through Custom MCP, so agents reach that data over the same connection.
It works with Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Codex, JetBrains IDEs, OpenCode, and Claude Desktop. Installation is a shell script on macOS or Linux, with agent-specific guides for Windows and remote clients. Every plan starts with a 21-day free trial requiring no credit card. Data Shield permission enforcement is an Enterprise feature, and rules files still need manual upkeep for stable conventions.
What it can do
- Answers questions across code, pull requests, issues, docs, and conversations with cited sources
- Resolves conflicts between sources and ranks results before delivery to the agent
- Fetches content behind URLs an agent encounters via context_get_urls
- Connects custom or self-hosted MCP servers through Custom MCP for admin-selected read-only tools
- Enforces permissions on Enterprise plans through Data Shield when people connect with their own accounts
- Works with the Unblocked REST API for research, search, and asynchronous Answers queries
Works with
- GitHub
- GitLab
- Slack
- Confluence
- Notion
- Jira
- Linear
- Google Docs
- Datadog
- Sentry
Before you choose
- Data Shield permission enforcement is part of the Enterprise plan and applies when people connect with their own account, not organization-wide API keys
- Rules files like AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md still need upkeep for stable conventions; Unblocked supplies the context that changes
- Built-in sources are indexed and cited, while Custom MCP servers are called only when relevant and expose read-only tools
