What it does
Backstory, formerly People.ai, connects to the systems where sellers work and captures emails, calls, meetings and CRM records automatically, matching each to the right account and opportunity. Revenue leaders, sales managers and revenue operations teams then ask plain-language questions about deal health, forecast changes, pipeline risk, account stakeholders and MEDDPICC qualification, and receive answers traced to the underlying meetings and emails.
Answers can be read in the Backstory web app, inside a CRM, or in AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini through an MCP server. Backstory connects to Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle, Gmail, Outlook, Zoom, Teams and Slack, and can work with several CRMs at once.
It is bought through a sales conversation rather than self-sign-up. Pricing is quote-based: a platform fee tied to how many customer-facing people are connected, plus pre-packaged consumption for answers, with no per-seat charge for viewers. The vendor says most teams are live in two to four weeks, and positions the product for CROs and VPs of Sales more than for individual reps.
