What it does

Cline is an open source AI coding agent. You give it a task in plain language along with your project files, terminal output, and optional rules. It can make coordinated multi-file edits with diffs, run shell commands and react to their output, and use a browser. Every action waits for your approval unless you turn on auto-approve.

You can use Cline inside VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and JetBrains editors, from a terminal through the CLI, in a native desktop app, or by embedding its SDK in your own products. Its distinctive features are Plan mode to agree on a strategy before Act mode executes it, checkpoints with one-click undo, support for many model providers including local models, and a .clinerules file that teaches it your repository's conventions.

Cline suits developers who want an inspectable, model-flexible agent with a human approving each step. The editor extension and CLI are free to install, but model access is billed separately: you can use Cline's usage billing, the $9.99/month ClinePass subscription, or your own provider key. You need either model access through one of those routes or local model weights to run it.

What it can do

  • Coordinated multi-file edits with diffs, checkpoints, and one-click undo
  • Plan mode to agree on a strategy, then Act mode to execute with per-step approval
  • Support for Claude, GPT, Gemini, Ollama, LM Studio, and OpenAI-compatible endpoints
  • Running terminal commands and reacting to their output in real time
  • Repository rules files (.clinerules) that encode coding standards
  • Extension via MCP servers and SDK-registered custom tools and hooks

Works with

  • Visual Studio Code
  • Windsurf
  • JetBrains IDEs
  • Cursor
  • Slack
  • Discord
  • Telegram
  • Linear
  • GitHub Actions
  • GitLab

Example workflows

Multi-file feature change in an editor
Input: a feature request in the Cline chat panel plus project files. Steps: switch to Plan mode to agree on a strategy, then switch to Act mode and approve each step. Output: coordinated file edits shown as diffs, with checkpoints you can undo in one click.
Headless run in CI
Input: a task prompt and repository in a CI pipeline such as GitHub Actions. Steps: install the CLI with npm, run Cline non-interactively with the task. Output: agent-driven changes and command output captured in the pipeline log.

Before you choose

  • Every action requires explicit approval by default; enabling auto-approve removes that checkpoint.
  • Usage cost depends on the model path you choose: usage billing, ClinePass, or your own provider key billed separately.
  • Enterprise governance and observability features are described on the docs site; check the docs or contact Cline for enterprise pricing.
