What it does
cmux is a free, open-source macOS terminal for people who run coding agents or other command-line work. It provides vertical tabs and workspaces, split panes, and a sidebar showing details such as the Git branch, working directory, ports, and notification text. Agent processes can run locally using the user's own keys, or in paid cloud VMs; the product is a terminal and workspace interface, not itself a coding model.
During work, notification rings and badges flag processes that need attention. A built-in browser can sit beside the terminal; its socket API supports navigation and browser actions, while the CLI and socket also expose workspace and pane controls, input, screen contents, and screenshots. The app can open SSH workspaces and attach to remote tmux sessions through a beta feature. Local agent use requires the relevant agent and its own keys; cloud execution requires a paid plan. The documented desktop requirements are macOS 14 or later and an Apple Silicon or Intel Mac. Session restore does not checkpoint arbitrary live process state: unsupported apps and ordinary shells reopen as normal terminals.

Before you choose
- The documented app requires macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon or Intel Mac; other desktop operating systems are not documented.
- Local CLI agents use the user's own keys; cloud VMs are included only with paid plans, and cloud execution has separate plan resource limits.
- Session restore does not checkpoint arbitrary live process state; unsupported terminal apps, tmux, vim, and ordinary shells reopen as normal terminals.
- The iOS companion is beta and pairs with a Mac. Paid plans list mobile access; homepage language also refers to Founder’s Edition early access, so confirm enrollment.
