What it does

Coder is a self-hosted platform that takes developer work requests, model choices, MCP tools, and workspace templates, and produces isolated development environments and AI coding agent sessions. Developers connect through the web UI, REST API, or editors such as VS Code and JetBrains, while platform teams define approved templates and models.

Teams can run their own agents, such as Claude Code or Codex, or the built-in Coder Agents inside ephemeral workspaces. The agent loop runs in the Coder control plane on infrastructure the customer controls, LLM credentials stay out of workspaces, and the AI Gateway and Agent Firewall log prompts, tool calls, and network decisions for audit.

Coder suits platform and security teams that need approved, auditable AI development on their own cloud, on-prem, or air-gapped infrastructure. The platform is free and open source under AGPL v3, while AI Governance features require paid plans whose amounts are not listed publicly. It is not a SaaS product, so customers host and operate it themselves.

What it can do

  • Run AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex inside ephemeral self-hosted workspaces
  • Use Coder Agents, a native agent loop running in the Coder control plane, with chat UI or REST API triggers
  • Route model requests through the AI Gateway with per-user attribution, prompt and token logging, and spend limits
  • Restrict agent outbound network access with a default-deny HTTP/HTTPS allowlist via Agent Firewall
  • Define standardized workspace templates in Terraform that enforce approved images, resource limits, and policies
  • Connect developers through VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, web IDEs, or SSH to self-hosted workspaces

Works with

  • Anthropic
  • OpenAI
  • Google
  • AWS Bedrock
  • GitHub
  • Jira
  • Slack
  • OIDC SSO
  • SCIM
  • Azure

Before you choose

  • Self-hosted only; Coder is not a SaaS offering, so you must host and operate it.
  • AI Governance features (AI Gateway, Agent Firewall, audit) require Premium or AI Premium plans; Community is limited to 5 active Coder Agents.
  • Self-hosting alone does not make a deployment compliant; configuration and operations determine GDPR or DORA posture.
