Gemini CLI
Open-source terminal agent for querying and editing code with Gemini models
- Tool type
- Open-source terminal AI agent
- Made for
- Developers and enterprise teams on Gemini Code Assist
- Runs on
- Local terminal (macOS, Linux, Windows via Node/npm)
- Installed with npm install -g @google/gemini-cli or run with npx; sandboxing is available.
What it does
Gemini CLI is an open-source agent that runs in your terminal and uses Gemini models. It takes in your local project context, including code, PDFs, images, and sketches, plus natural-language prompts, and produces code edits, debugging help, newly generated apps, and automated command output. It can also run non-interactively in scripts and emit plain text, JSON, or streamed JSON events.
People use it to query and change large codebases, troubleshoot issues in plain language, and automate operational tasks such as reviewing pull requests or handling rebases. It can connect to MCP servers to add tools, including media generation with Imagen, Veo, or Lyria. Its distinct features include plan mode, subagents, hooks, checkpointing, sandboxing, and IDE integration.
It fits developers and teams already on Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise, or Code Assist for GitHub on Google Cloud, plus legacy paid API or Vertex keys. Google's pages say unpaid and Google One users were moved to Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026, and the tool is not optimized for Gemini 4 series models or for benchmarking.
What it can do
- Query and edit large codebases from the terminal
- Generate new apps from PDFs, images, or sketches using multimodal input
- Debug issues and troubleshoot with natural language
- Automate operational tasks such as querying pull requests or complex rebases
- Connect extra tools through MCP servers, including media generation with Imagen, Veo, or Lyria
- Run non-interactively in scripts with text, JSON, or stream-json output
Works with
- MCP servers
- VS Code companion (IDE integration)
Example workflows
- Codebase question and summary
- Input: a local repository and a prompt such as 'summarize yesterday's changes'. Steps: run gemini from the repo root and submit the prompt. Output: a natural-language summary of recent commits from the terminal session.
- Scripted analysis
- Input: a prompt passed with -p and the --output-format json flag. Steps: run gemini non-interactively from a shell script and parse the JSON response. Output: structured text for downstream steps in the script.
Before you choose
- Unpaid tier and Google One users were moved to Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026; check that your account type is still supported.
- Not optimized for Gemini 4 series models such as Gemini 4 Argon; use Antigravity CLI for those.
- Not intended for benchmarking Gemini models because its harness is not tuned for Gemini 4+.
