Gives AI coding agents Shopify-specific docs, schema validation, and CLI-backed store tasks
- Tool type
- AI coding toolkit for Shopify development
- Made for
- Shopify app and extension developers
- Runs on
- Local terminal and supported AI coding tools
- Requires Node.js 18 or higher; runs inside Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity CLI, Cursor, Hermes, OpenClaw, Pi, or VS Code.
What it does
Shopify AI Toolkit gives an AI coding agent Shopify-specific context for building apps and extensions. You give it a task or prompt, and it draws on the codebase and Shopify's developer documentation and API schemas. It returns guidance from current Shopify reference material, validation results for GraphQL queries, Liquid templates, and Shopify Extensions, and, if you choose, store-management actions run through Shopify CLI's authenticated context.
You can install it as a plugin in Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity CLI, Cursor, Hermes, OpenClaw, Pi, or VS Code, or add its agent skills or the Dev MCP server directly. A documented use case is migrating checkout and customer account extensions on API versions before 2025-10 to newer versions, including converting code to Polaris web components. The plugin updates automatically; skills installed directly do not, and you still need to test the migrated result.
It suits developers building Shopify apps and extensions who already use one of the supported AI coding tools. It requires Node.js 18 or higher, and store-management tasks depend on Shopify CLI authentication. Generated changes should still be reviewed and tested before release.
What it can do
- Looks up relevant Shopify API surfaces from developer docs and API schemas
- Validates GraphQL queries, Liquid templates, and Shopify Extensions against Shopify schemas
- Prepares and runs supported store-management tasks through Shopify CLI's authenticated store context, at the user's choice
- Assists with bulk extension migration tasks such as updating API versions and replacing legacy components
- Provides a Dev MCP server that runs locally without authentication
Works with
- Claude Code
- Codex
- Antigravity CLI
- Cursor
- Hermes
- OpenClaw
- Pi
- Visual Studio Code
- Shopify CLI
Before you choose
- Skills installed directly with npx skills add do not update automatically; run npx skills update to get the latest versions.
- Earlier per-surface skills such as shopify-admin and shopify-liquid are deprecated and should be replaced with the shopify skill.
- Store-management tasks run through Shopify CLI authentication, and you choose when to execute them.
- The toolkit reduces repetitive migration work but does not remove the need to review and test migrated extensions.
